So, I bought the Orchestra Musician's CD-ROM Library today (for clarinet, obviously), and I'm very excited, and I really love it so far. Questions for you, though. The Table of Contents states that if you click on a piece -- like of a symphony, or overture, or concerto, or whatever -- and there is no orchestration for my instrument (AKA the clarinet), I will get a blank PDF page that simply says "TACET".
1.) If there is no orchestration for my instrument, why is the piece even listed? This is an orchestral excerpt "book", and if my instrument doesn't even play in a particular piece, why is it in the Table of Contents? To get my hopes up!?
2.) Why does Weber's Clarinet Concerto have no clarinet part? What the heck?

1. this tells you what pieces are in the collection - even if there is no clarinet part, there are parts for other instruments
2. its been a long time since i looked at a score for this one - i dont think there is a clarinet part for it - isnt the accompanyment a small chamber orchestra?
my memory's fuzzy. all i've seen lately is the piano reductions.
don't confuse the solo part with the orchestral accompanyment.
i'm sure someone on the board has a reference book and will post the instrumentation.

The Weber Clarinet Concerti, #1 Op.73 and #2 Op.74 are scored in the woodwinds for 2 flutes, 2 oboes and 2 bassoons, but no clarinets.
Since the CD-ROM collection is of orchestral parts, the solo clarinet part is not included.
There are obviously many orchestral pieces, especially in Volume VI (Mozart and Haydn) which do not have clarinet parts. If you check the table of contents of that particular volume you will see a number of Mozart Piano Concerti, Violin Concerti, Symphonies and at least 15 Haydn Symphonies listed which are not included in the clarinet collection because there is no clarinet part originally scored.
Still - the entire collection is a must have for your library ...GBK

But there is a solo clarinet part for Debussy's Premiere Rhapsody. Why do they have this solo piece, but not one for the Weber Concertos?

I did notice this apparent inconsistancy in their choice to include the solo part for the Debussy, but not for the Weber works.
It seems as if the editors took a very literal interpretation of the full title of the Debussy, which reads:
"Premiere Rhapsodie Pour Orchestre Avec Clarinette principal en Si b"
Perhaps they considered the (solo) clarinet part in the Debussy as a principal (orchestra) part? ...GBK

"Perhaps they considered the (solo) clarinet part in the Debussy as a principal (orchestra) part?"
Actually, probably not but, if so, the decisions were likely made awhile ago and at different times. Most of the versions contained in these CD's are the Kalmus versions (I haven't checked but I wonder if Luck's sells the same imprints). What we get on the CD is probably determined by what they (or other publishers) include in the sets they sell/rent. According to the Kalmus website, instrumentation for the Debussy is:
3, 2+1, 2, 2+1 - 4, 2, 0, 0, perc, 2hp, str, solo clarinet IN SET [emphasis mine]
For Weber, on the other hand, (and I only note Concerto 1 in the CD table of contents) the instrumentation list is:
2, 2, 0, 2 - 3, 2, 0, 0, timp, str, solo clarinet
which, by comparison, suggests that the solo part is not in the set.
At least they included the Premiere Rhapsodie and one of the Weber concerti. They omitted the Mozart concerto from Mozart/Haydn CD and also do not include the Nielsen concerto in their forthcoming Vol VII - Ravel (with the Suites from Daphnis and Chloe et. al.), Elgar and more (Dukas, Holst [Planets only], Delius, Chadwick, Griffes, D'Indy, Nielsen (whose name they can't spell, either).
Best regards,

Jack...
Your explanation sounds reasonable and is probably just what the editors did in their inclusion (or exclusion) of solo parts.
I'd be curious to see if they included the solo violin concerti parts (Mozart, Beethoven, Bruch, Mendelssohn, etc...) in their violin editions.
Thanks for the heads-up on the upcoming Volume 7 ...GBK
