I’m looking for a room mate to share the room expense at the Omni hotel for the 2006 Clarinetfest.
I have reserved a double occupancy room from 8/9 thru 8/12 (4 nights).

can anyone recommend a hotel etc within walking distance (up to 20min walk) of the luxurious four star Omni hotel, that costs a bit less. When my group made our budget for funding there was no info available on the ICA website, and i made the silly mistake of budgetting for a similar cost as other Clarinetfests that have had Dorm housing available on University Campus.
any recommendations would be gratefully received

Don,
The Atlanta Days Inn Downtown is just a few blocks away, and their rates are very reasonable. I am staying there the night before the Fest starts but will be moving over to the Omni after that.
If you have a party of two to four poeple, the Omni can put you all in the same room for a good price, and being on site is WAY more convenient!

I think the ICA has made a wrong turn in the priciness of the Atlanta location. Personal opinion.

It seems pricey, but like I mentioned, if you split a room with even one other
person it is very reasonable and you don't have to worry about commuting in the heat.
My personal opinion is that the mugginess is pretty unbearable and it is worth it to me to stay on site. I have lived on the west coast of the US all my life, and we get a lot of heat in the summer, but it is dry heat and is much easier to bear. I could hardly stand the mugginess in College Park MD two years ago, so I imagine Atlanta would kill me off! It is worth it to me to stay in a nice air conditioned location and not have to commute.

The New Orleans fest was also a bit pricey, but did very well. Ditto the Japanese one (though I didn't stay at hotels).
(I just looked up the price - $129/night for the Omni downtown Atlanta? That's a fantastic price for that hotel!)

I am paying more for a Red Roach Inn in Philly to visit the parents.
Omni is the downtown landmark hotel in Atlanta's revival.

having heard people grumble about dorm accomodation at previous "clarinet events" i have no doubt that there will be lots of people very happy that this years clarinetfest is a high class affair.
For me, the cost of the Omni is the difference between me buying a new clarinet or not.

Many of those who attend the meetings are on a very limited budget. And, when we were going (back in the 1980s), we saw many instructors at the college level who brought their spouse along to combine business with pleasure, so further sharing there is out of the question.
We tried the dorm route at Virginia Commonwealth University (1985 or 1986), and thereafter resolved to opt for the hotel. Better beds, better climate control, and (quite frankly) a much quieter environment for sleeping. But, not everyone is able to afford the tariff.
THis is one reason why I feel that doing the conference at a hotel (as was done in N'Awlins a couple of times ago) is a mistake. If it's done at a school, there are always lodging facilities available in addition to the school facility. The reversed situation (i.e., at a hotel) doesn't offer the low priced lodgings at all.
