Better safe than sorry. minimally OT

July 4th in the USA.
A day for fireworks.

This billet flew off of my drill press at 2500 rpms.
Look what the incident did to bend a HHS high speed steel drill bit. (see the attached picture in jpg format).
Luckily I was wearing a full face shield, safety gloves, and a respirator.

Moral of the story.....If you are doing anything remotely dangerous, heed the safety precautions....esp if you plan any pyrotechnics today.

Wow...I don't know if you could have designed a more lethal high-speed weapon. If that doesn't argue for safety precautions I don't know what does.

Reminds me of my old days as an instrument repair technician apprentice. Not paying attention to what you were doing while buffing keys would lead to a piece of keywork becoming a projectile, usually flying off into a far corner of the shop.

Believe it or not, the billet is fine.....more than I can say for the drill.
The problem was in the chuck, which is now in the recycling bin.
Fortunately, I have a spare, which is more than I can say for my cranium.

Yes, wow, Alseq, certainly a revolutionary experience on the 4th ! As with ?nearly? all of us, close shaves recur, mine was "chemical", not mechanical, wading thru shoe-depth liquid n-butane [winter-time] to turn off the boiler fire, avoiding a firey catastrophie at the risk of my life. NEVER AGAIN !! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Well I guess I could leave the bit in place, bore it out, and sell it as a smoker's pipe.

Naw, bore of .544 (see picture) too small for barrel and too wide for Dunhill or Charatan. Maybe a "head" shop could use it.

Actually billet survived and is being readied for Atlanta

....Anyone know a good tobacconist there??? (just kidding)

OUCH.

I was once considering contact lenses when I noticed the metal chips bouncing off of my safety glasses in the shop. Never got beyond that thought!

Glad you were being smart.
