I am a PhD student at Sheffield Uni with a muscial problem.
All the student music ensembles stop rehersing over the summer and I have no where to play.
Does anyone know of a resonable windband or big band in this area looking for clarinetists/saxophonists that I and a couple of friends could join to keep us sane inbetween quartet rehersals.
Or any idea of where to find info on this sort of thing.

"once upon a time" [mid '90's summer-time] , we passed thru Victoria Station and for a half-hour or so listened to a FINE concert band playing quite-intricate music well [what we would likely call a {good}"community band" in the US]. I am from Sheffield. Try Trevor Barnes who plays lead tenor/clarinet with the Keith Peters Big Band at the Brincliffe Oaks pub in Nether Edge. They play the last Tuesday in the month commencing 20.30 hrs.Trevor is an Alumnus of Sheffield Uni as I am.He has an interest in several sax/clarinet classical/jazz groups in the area. Thanks for the suggestions!
I know of the Keith Peters band as a couple of my friends are already involved in it, unfortunately clarinet is my main instrument and my saxphone playing isn't really up to their standard.
Re. BASWE, yep, know all about it and have played in the conference a few times, I know Kieron and am a member of Yorkshire Wind Orchestra although getting to rehersals is a bit difficult (Wakefield) and you sort of have to sit around and wait to be asked to play for each gig which is annoying.

I have heard there are a couple of concert bands in Sheffield, I'm sure I'll find out where soon enough.
