example of clarinet in "pop" music?
Author: Rory
Date:   2006-07-01 23:53

I'm in need of some help and I think y'all might have some ideas. I'm putting together examples of clarinet playing in different genres and I'm still trying to think up popular music examples employing a clarinet (commercial music, TV themes, movie music, accompanying a song on the radio, etc.) This lesson is designed to teach middle schoolers more about the clarinet sound, so easily recognizable Bb, Eb, or bass examples would be especially useful. Can anyone think of an example off the top of their head? Thanks so much!

Clarinets are used in the music for "This Old House" and "The Antiques Road Show" on PBS TV.

Here's a couple.

In the news lately, since Paul just turned 64, is the Beatles "When I'm 64". It has a great clarinet part.

A recent credit card ad features the clarinet solo from Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony.

The theme of the American TV show Law & Order. About as kichy pop as it can be.

You mean the "clarinet synth" part?

Mark,

For the first few years of the show, the Law & Order theme employed a real clarinet player. I stopped watching the show when they switched.

Yeah, I wondered about the L & O, myself, its a fav. of my wife, BUT not mine. RE: bass cl, the most recognizable is the "donkey" in "On the Trail", Grofe, used widely in P M commercials. How about great sop. cl solos, Begin the Begoon, B G's theme, & Sing X 3, Woody H's Woodchumpers Bell. Wish I could think of one for Alto cl, my current fav !! I'll bet John Moses can suggest many, including some of his own !! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I think Law & Order has a lot of different versions of opening themes, I think a soprano sax one too? I don't watch this show much but the times I saw the theme I remembered a clarinet, and I think it was a real clarinet. Everything from the USA gets here in a big delay so probably what I saw was pretty old, maybe even from the first seasons that Paul says had a real clarinet.

Strange reason to stop watching a show. To me, anyway.

Mark,

You'd continue to watch a show with a phony clarinet?

Turn in your union card.

Don't forget Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" -- it's only briefly in the middle of the song, though.

Carefully listen to movies' background music - you'll spot the clarinet (and oboe or bassoon) quite often.

How about Berstein's fantastically fine playing at the end of The Terminal?

How about Ian Herbert's fine playing in almost all the episodes of Midsomer Murders?

How about the solos in West Side Story?

Also in Jurassic Park, Priates of the Caribbean, and a huge number of love-story movies feature the clarinet. (There was something in the last X-Men, but I don't recall it well.)

How about Rhapsody in Blue? I used to show the cartoon sketch in Fantasia 2000(the Disney movie). Great cross curicular example!

How about "The Terminal" soundtrack?

The clarinet is showing up in a lot of commercials lately. You shouldn't have any trouble locating examples.

Soundtrack of <<Accidental Tourist>> (pretty prominent...bless John Williams)
Soundtrack of <<Out of Africa>> (I think this movie has the Mozart)
<<Enya>> (on her first album she played, but got wise later and left it to pros)
Soundtrack of <<Amelie>> (ALL OVER....it's magnificent)
Bjork has used the clarinet numerous time, but you have to listen

Would music used in movies really be considered "pop" music for the most part? Some have stated symphony music used in movies. Should we really consider Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony popular music now because it was used in a commercial? IMHO it's still in the symphonic realm, not pop.

Yes, I think it does become popular when used in a context which the public can identify. What you said you were looking for is music that people would recognize.

If you are looking for music on today's pop singles charts that includes original music for clarinet, you'll be hard pressed to find it. You'll also be hard pressed to make the argument that the clarinet is an instrument which is often used in popular music, unless you expand your definition of popular to include "music they are likely to hear", no matter what the genre.
