Hello, our band played this piece last night, I know this is transcription for band, but what's the background? Was this one of Mozart's earlier opera/work? Thanks.

A Google search on "Der Schauspieldirektor" will give lots of information.
In short, this was a brief one-act comic opera composed by Mozart in 1786 for a musical event/party given by Emperor Joseph II.
The Kochel number is K.486 ...GBK

I do not know the band arrangement, but the original overture was in the key of C major and was scored for 2 clarinets in C.
On a Bb clarinet, you would be playing in your own key of D...GBK

On my bass clarinet part, the music is in C, arranged by Clifford Barnes.

Oh yeah, concert band arragement is definitely available as that's what we are rehearsing/performing. Clarinets have the melody as usual.
