 mpc's for non-Bb sops?
Author: Jasen

I've been picking up some older clarinets for restoration projects (can't have too many clarinets!) and a couple don't have mouthpieces, or damaged mouthpieces. I haven't owned a C or A soprano before so not sure about what they use. It would seem they're close enough in size and key that normal Bb mouthpiece/reeds would be fine? I have a couple B45's and a Gigliotti I could use on them in that case.
And the Eb? It has it's own specific mouthpiece, not a Bb model, correct?
Any recomendations on mouthpieces to avoid with these harmony sopranos would definitely be appreciated as well.

A clarinets use Bb mouthpieces.

Eb clarinets use Eb mouthpieces.

C clarinets can use Bb mouthpieces, but a specially-designed mouthpiece may work better.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Vandoren has a substantial line of mouthpieces for various specialty clarinets. They're not always as advertised as the standard Bb/A and bass mouthpieces, but they do exist. They even carry German style mouthpieces (suitable for string ligature) in different tenon diameters to fit the variations in German horns. Most of the Internet music sales folks should be able to get any of these for you.

When you get into custom mouthpieces, it may be a different story. Some mouthpiece specialists only face or reface blanks, and are not able to produce a true custom mouthpiece for (say) a D clarinet. Ask first would be my policy there.

Back when I was playing B45dot I was never satisfied with the intonation of my R13 C clarinet. About a year ago I switched (after a brief affair with M15) to a Morgan RM-06 mouthpiece and I think it sounds and tunes sensational with my C clarinet (I'm happy with it for Bb and A, too).

Works for me!

(Disclaimer - I am maker of the Forte' Bb and C clarinets)
In the process of making our "C" clarinet I decided to try examples of the current crop of "C" clarinets on the market - not a scientific or exaustive trial and only me as the player. For the most part my standard Bb mouthpiece worked well on a variety of examples but I also took a mouthpiece that had been optimized for the Buffet series "C" clarinets - E-11 and Prestige (although they have different bores and other quality differences) and these clarinets as well as several that did not play exceptionally well with my regular Bb mouthpiece benefited from the optimized mouthpiece. Our own goal for the Forte' C was to make our clarinet play well with a variety of Bb mouthpieces. Another player may have a different experience - just my own observations -YMMV.

I had a nice Noblet C that came with a "dedicated" mouthpiece. I noted that it played **just as well** with a regular Bb mouthpiece.

I sold the horn to a pro new music performer, and am awaiting a new C clarinet from, ahem, someone well-known to this bulletin board.[wink] It would sure be nice for this person to make an Eefer (hint) his next venture.
