 5RV 13 Issues

I have a Vandoren 5RV 13 mouthpiece that I purchased about a year ago. I am absolutely in love with the change in tone it gives me, but only about a month after I purchased it, I found that I encounter sporadic high-pitched squeaks when I tongue almost any notes above the middle C with a hard articulation (e.g., staccato). It is not an ordinary reed squeak, however, and I have become desperate especially recently to resolve the problem because I want to resume using that mouthpiece. Since I started having the problems, I have been playing on a Leblanc/Woodwind Co. mouthpiece that works fine but gets nowhere near the beautiful tone I get from the Vandoren mouthpiece.

Current set-up: Leblanc Noblet 40 clarinet, Vandoren V12 reeds, WW Co. K45 (I think?) mouthpiece to replace the Vandoren mouthpiece.

Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

Interesting.

I too had a similar issue with the mouthpiece. As usual I thought it might be best to have a mouthpiece guy straighten out the opening but never got around to it. In a bold move for me (I NEVER try new reeds, just always used Vandoren 4s) I tried the 56 Rue Lepic and VIOLA.......the squeaks went away and the tone improved five fold.

My guess is that the mouthpiece needs a longer vamp reed than most and the 56s fit the bill perfectly.

I use strength 3.5.

I've considered doing something like trying new reeds but have feared doing so in vain and wasting money. A question to Paul Aviles -- did you have the issue with the 5Rv 13 itself or was it a similar mouthpiece? Perhaps I may want to invest in some Rue Lepic reeds. It might be worth the money...

Dear SGB2007,

Yes, my problem was with a 5RV Lyre, series 13, profile 88 Vandoren mouthpiece. Perhaps this is just an issue of just how much mouthpeice we take in to the mouth, but I have a natural place where mouthpieces go into my mouth and that will NEVER change. The additional factor to consider is that I have always tended toward mouthpieces with longer lays and this was never an issue before.

Odd.

But, at least this combination works wonders for me. You must be prepared for the 56s to be a bit stronger than their regular Vandoren counterparts. We have discussed issues with the reed not lasting as long as the traditional cut on this board before but I have as yet not had this problem. Perhaps it is because I live with the slight bump in strength to the reed of the same strength number I have always used.

So far.....AMAZING!
