I am wondering if anyone knows who the clarinettists in Leningrad Philharmonic were before 1961.
Many thanks.

Ahh - one of my all-time favorite orchestras, especially under Mravinsky.

Here is a link to their website:

http://www.philharmonia.spb.ru/

Email to the orchestra can be addressed here:

mail@spbphilharmonic.com

Just ask them for a history of their clarinet section going back to WWII. You may wish to also translate your question into Russian. A nice website for translations is translate.ru

Good luck

I believe it was Valery Bezruchenko. According to an interview with him published in Pamela Weston's 'Clarinet Virtuosi of Today' he played on German system Franz Koktan instruments.

Thanks for the response.
I think Valery Bezruchenko only started his job in 1961; I am trying to find the one before him.
I will try to email the orchestra and see what comes up.

Bezruchenko became principal and soloist in 1960. His predecessor was Vladimir Gensler and before Gensler was Vladimir Krasavin.

Vladimir Gensler was principal with 1930 for 1957

Isaac Roginsky recorded the Manevich Concerto with the Leningrad Philharmonic in 1960. See http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=28955&t=28955. I'm not sure whether he played in the orchestra, but it seems likely.

He eventually moved to New York City. Everyone came to see the man who produced such a gigantic sound and was amazed to find that he was barely 5' tall. I've been told, but have no source, that he apparently couldn't find work and died in poverty.

Ken Shaw
