 Roger (Clemens) and Me
Author: Ralph G

So the crowd at my Municipal Band concert last night was smaller than usual. We were competing against Roger Clemens, who was in town pitching his second tuneup game with our AA baseball team just a couple of miles away.

Well, they missed a hell of a show, including my big "solo" during a rest in Zampa. Oops...

Heck, if I could've gotten tickets, I woulda been at the game too. But it sold out in like 7 seconds.

Anybody ever had to go up against big-time entertainment before?

Ralph,

I watched the game on TV. First minor league game I know of that was shown, let alone in prime time, by a major (Fox) network. I'm glad your concert went well.

I love baseball so much but given the choice I'd rather listen to a fine clarinetist churn out the band part to Zampa any day. Perhaps, I despise Roger Clemens that much. I recall years back my WWQ performing at Schenectady Community College. We rolled into town super late, set-up and barely made downbeat. We only attracted about a 100 which was unusual even for us. After the gig our sponsor told us The Canadian Brass, as we spoke was playing a concert downtown at Proctors Theater. If only I would've known; those dudes are my fav! v/r Ken

John,

ESPN showed Clemens Single-A start in Kentucky last week during SportsCenter -- not the whole game, but they cut over to it live whenever Clemens was on the mound. Got a kick out of that kid who hit the dinger off him -- he ran around the bases in a sprint, not daring to show up the Rocket. And his number was 22 to boot.

I planned to tape Sunday's game but forgot all about it in the rush to get to rehearsal and then the gig. Drat...
