 Forte VS Yamaha 250
Author: TheVelho

Hello,

I consider buying a clarinet and I never played it before. For the 400-450$ pricerange, the Forte and the Yamaha 250 clarinets seem very interesting.

- Which is the best ?
- Are there other good clarinets in the same price range?
- Is it possible to order some Forte's in France? (That's where I live!)

Thanks in advance. I *really* can't wait to play my future clarinet...

The Forte' has been sent to many countries - including France.

I haven't used the Yamaha 250, but have played the Forte and it is excellent. You've already gotten the Doc's personal attention (his post above), so ask him to pick one for you. There are many, many reviews of the Forte on this board, do a search and you'll see that it is very favorably received here by players and teachers.

With the Forte you will be getting a quality Gennusa mouthpiece and a nice protective case in addition to a highly touted horn. You already have Omar's personal attention.

In Paris there is an abundance of excellent second hand instruments. For the price of a new plastic instrument you will be able to find a nice older wooden clarinet, and buy a good quality new mouthpiece suitable for a beginner. Try contact Guy Collin on rue Charlot, 3eme.

The Forte has the advantage that you are dealing directly with the maker and both he and the clarinet have a good reputation on this forum.
The yamaha has the advantage that you buy it from a local store and in case of a problem it is probably easier/less expensive to deal with (for example in the unlikely case that you would have to ship the Forte back). That depends a lot on how good the customer service is at your local store.

I also agree with the post above, that for a beginner a used instrument is probably the best way to go to get a good price for a reasonable clarinet. Remember that for the Forte you would have to pay tax when it arrives (16.5% - 30% here, I have no idea what it is in France but I think it is also a lot).

A theoretical question for Americans: If the Forte was made in Europe, could only be mail ordered (i.e. you can't try it before you decide), and the tax you had to pay was around 20%, would you still order it and not buy a Yamaha (or any similar plastic clarinet) at your local store (or online American store)?
