How does one tell a Buffet R-13 is an "A" clarinet as opposed to a Bb? I don't see any designation on the joints, bell, or barrel. Do you go by sizes?
(My purpose is that while looking at old "A" clarinets, I want to make sure that the individual parts are actually for an "A" clarinet. ) Are the serial numbers different?

On newer ones the barrel and bell are stamped B or A.
R13 B or R13 A on the bell.
R13 B 660 or R13 A 650 on the barrel.
If there are no markings, put it together , Play a C into a tuner.
It will either read Bb or A....
Assemble the instrument - A clarinets are longer.

....and note, too, that there is a difference in bells.
An A bell is about 1/16" longer than a Bb bell
Depending on the intonation of the 3 lowest notes and their respective 12th's, some players interchange the bells.

In pictures, I look at the gap on the lower joint between the socket ring at the top and the first key cup. I think I can sorta recognize the size of the gap on the Bb clarinet, so if it looks wider than that, I figure it's an A.
Hardly scientific, but it usually works.
