Author: b.roke

i have started playing around with a Noblet Bb to teach myself how to repad and repair clarinets. it is incomplete - i need a couple of pivot screws and have searched, with Google's help, the world wide web for several days but have got no closer to said screws.

does anyone know where I may find a source for these?

Go to www.windcraft.co.uk and enter the Windcraft store (and not Dawks). Then in the upper left scroll down go to Woodwinds, then in the next scroll down to Clarinet, and in the next to Leblanc. There is a pivot screw there for Leblancs which maybe are the same as the Noblet screws. Probably you should email to ask if it fits and if they have it in stock.

Or you can do what the best repairer I know told me he does. Find a screw as similar as possible and make it fit. He is a former engineer so have a lot of rediculously advanced equipment which maybe necessary for it though.

Hope this helps.

Ferrees resells them in the USA.

also, if you are NAPBIRT then you can get the screws from the Selmer distributor who recently bought out GLeblanc USA - at least that's the way it is in the USA.

Also votaw tools (US) i think sells them too.

i'm sure i have some too if your other leads don't work out or are too costly.

you can also check a local full service repair shop. I'm sure they will sell you some.

But check your regional distributor as they should certainly have some and save you the hassle with buying from overseas for little pivot screws.

When I needed a couple of pivot screws for my rather old Leblanc LL's, I wrote to Leblanc in Paris and they sent me half a dozen. I'm not sure what the response will be now, after the fire there, but worth trying?

B roke

what vintage Noblet do you have?

I think the old oval emblem model 40s/27s had the pivot screws such as found in Normandys - kinda like a pointed cylinder versus a pivot screw w/a head.

Good luck. your id has you in New Zealand? so I would try a local repair shop first.

many thanks to all. in the US i imagine i could walk into any music repair shop and get some - clarinets are very small fry in NZ!

thanks for the info re online suppliers - great. just what i wanted.

thanks also for the offer steve - i have 2 Noblets, 1 with the oval emblem and a D bove it. the other is curved top and bottom with straight sides and an N above it. the D seems older - i would appreciate any info on ages.

and a final thanks to the BB regular who is posting some to me - the community aspect of this BB is tremendous.

Second Ferree's.....they're extremely helpful. I did the 'experiment' with a Bundy Alto Clarinet. They sent me the pads in no time (even offered to let me send them the old pads in an envelope and they'd match them up for me.) Be careful, they may sell pivot screws in lots.....otherwise they'll never make money.

Be a little cautious. Over time, manufacturers tend to have a habit of changing pivot screws, especially the thread. Suppliers tend to give the illusion that there is only one type of screw per brand.

I do not know if this is the case for Le Blanc (who make Noblet).

Be aware also, that it is very common to have to make minute adjustments to the post or key to make a replacement screw fit, using specialised tools.

As a technician, in Auckland, I stock 26 different types of pivot screw for clarinet alone. They are not cheap, because I have to build in the costs of having them sitting here as almost dead stock for many years.

Unfortunately my stocks of LeBlanc are low at present and I want to keep them for my own use until my next big order from a suitable supplier, which could well be months away.

However, contact me if you encounter problems with supply or quantity limits. It is often more difficult, e.g. horrendous freight charges - to get any specialised items to NZ from overseas. 09 625 9656
