Just for some fun (not necessarily fact-based),
Guitar has the early Fender Strats, saxophone the Selmer Mark VI, what is the holy grail of bass clarinet? Past and/or present.

A band mate I used to play with has a Buffet low C bass clarinet of vintage year, probably 50 years old if not older. What I remember most is the large size metal bell, it is much bigger and longer than our standard bell today. It approached the size of the one used on Selmer Eb contra alto.
The horn has "radio" or "opera" engraved on it, possibly a model name. Can't comment on how it plays though. At the time I thought it must be pretty rare.
Anyone else has seen one?

I just can't equate musical instruments with cups ... supposedly used at the last supper, sorry.

In my opinion, the 'holy grail' bass clarinet hasn't been designed and built yet (although I haven't played Stephen Fox's remarkable German-bore instrument, which is reputedly very fine). The Selmer 33/37 and Buffet 1193-2 are probably the best that are readily available, but could be improved in so many ways that, to me at least, they're hardly the stuff of dreams.

For me....the Old Leblanc 400's from the 50's and 60's. Those suckers talk to ya!
For the masses...the Buffet Radio model. It's the only Buffet on which the register mechanism makes sense, and by 'only' I mean, the only Bass Clarinet they've ever made with a register mechanism that doesn't totally suck.
