I guess the Subject line says it all. I've been thinking about trying one but it's always been my contention that the wider you open your mouth (while playing a woodwind) the bigger is the oral chamber. The "88" allowing as it does, less distance between upper teeth and lower lip would seem to mitigate against what I consider to be one factor in having a good sound - the bigger oral chamber that obtains with a traditional profile, (albeit not much bigger than you'd have with the 88, I'm sure!). Any thoughts?

I've only ever played on the Profile 88 (2 different models), but my teacher likes my tone. Is this a Vandoren specific designation? Do other MP manufacturers offer different beak profiles?

Definitely the 'Profile 88' beak for me - I prefer the playing angle this gives, and also it's a thinner beak. I notice the difference when I change to my A1 crystal - the Profile 88 is much less tiring on the jaw muscles in comparison.
There are other mouthpieces on the market with thin beaks, but you'd have to compare them to see the differences.

Some think the Profile 88 beak is more comfortable to play. If it is possible for you to try both (by buying from someone who offers a trial period), that would be the best thing to do. It's the only way you will know for certain which you prefer and which sounds better to you.
