Anyone have information about the quality of instruments from this maker (from Providence RI)?

G. Pruefer, Providence, R.I., student to intermediate quality. I've restored some of their supposedly professional models and generally been disappointed. IMO Pruefers are a cut below Penzel-Mueller, the 'other' well-known American manufacturer of the 20th century.

Dave, do you know anything about the Pruefer Silver Throat Deluxe (sp?)?

The Silver Throat was a hard-rubber student model with metal-lined bore. Very rugged, plays OK but nothing to write home about.

Somewhere along the cl trading line, I had a Silver Throat U J, which I "mated" to a Vito L J, the dern thing really played quite well, didn't check tuning, but t'warnt BAD, gave it to a needy student, end of that story. I bot a Pruefer 19/7 wood, which John Butler restored [and I tweaked it a bit]. A V G looker, plays well, again, tuning is ??. A reasonably good maker, IMHO. I agree "generally" with Dave S . Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

the silver throat is my weapon of choise for big band and out door work in general . not only is it durable and weather resistant but also has the BIGGEST voice of ANY clarinet i have ever played. yes i own all the top models vintage and have a r13 but this horn really projects like nothing else! student horn or not -i really like this clarinet. preforming moonlite seranade on this baby and you will be soaring over the top of the band .

I have a Pruefer from 1940 and it's quite nice with a very good sound. However, the keys bend easily on this particular instrument. In addition, one must use the Pruefer barrel or one equally as long. On this model, the upper joint is shorter than what we are accustomed to in most brands and the barrel is correspondingly longer. This one has a very nice sounding throat Bb.
