 Debussy Premier Rhapsody
Author: Cindy

I was going to order the music for this piece (debussy premier rhapsody) and I discovered that there are many versions. I was wondering which edition is the best to use for college repertoire. I tried to get a hold of my teacher and was unable to, and I need to order it asap so I can begin preparing it. So, any advice would be much appreciated.

So many instruments to play........so little time to play them!

I was asked when I ordered it which edition I wanted - I asked for the Durand edition as that's the only company I knew of off the top of my head that published Debussy's works.

Was that a wise move?

I have the Original Edition and the cheapy 'Woodwind Edition' - they don't differ quite too much except the cheap one uses english instead of french to describe tempi etc.

If you purchased the Durand Edition for clarinet and piano, there are some errors that you'll need to correct. Fortunately, there's a pdf of the Original Durand Publication with orchestra on this website. Make sure you consult this resource and correct these errors, some of them are pitch errors, and some are dynamic errors. It's located here:

Good luck!

The edition by David Hite (Southern Pub.) is nice, cheaper, and has a brief history and context of the work. It's similar to his commentary in his editions of other clarinet etudes such as the French, German, and Italian school books.

Cindy -

We should all thank our guru Mark Charette for posting the orchestra score of the Debussy.

Charles Neidich is the leading authority on the piece. You should read his comments at

Henle have just published an Urtext version. The pages turns are in good places and it is very nicely laid out. It also has the Petit Piece alongside.

Very good edition.

The Collins video is a really excellent performance. So is the slow movement of the Mozart Concerto on the same site. Watch along the bottom, where the "author" is identified as "Wolfang Amadeus Concerto."

I heard Michael do the Rhapsody in a recital back in November, it was stunning playing.

I'd definitely give my right arm to play like that.

Only problem is if I do that, I'd never be able to play again!

The durand version isnt bad, although ive only used it to get to know the piece not for a recital performance of anything yet. That video link before was fantastic! michael collins does amazingly well.
