Bartok and Klezmer Videos

Here are two recently posted clarinet videos:

The Bartok Contrasts, with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Chamber Soloists, Junko Naito, Violin; Jacques Meertens, Clarinet; Sepp Grotenhuis, Piano. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4374881776614884020&q=clarinet

The Bartok was shot from the audience, apparently only with the mic built into the camera, so the sound quality isn't great. However, the performance is exceptional. Notice how economical Meertens is in his finger movements. His fingers stay so close to the instrument you can barely see them move.

Thanks! Yeah, his technique looks great. Makes me want to bust out the ole' Klose and Baermann later...woohoo...

Jacques Meertens has been co-principal of the Concertgebouw Orchestra http://www2.rnw.nl/mu/en/behind/biographies/concertgebouw, along with George Pieterson, who, I know, plays a reform Boehm clarinet.

The video isn't clear enough to see the details of the keywork, but the barrel looks a bit shorter than on plain Boehm instruments, and it's characteristic of the reform Boehm design. On the other hand, when they bow at the end, I don't see the reform Boehm extra pad on the right side of the instrument between the low E and low F pads, but, again, the picture is too fuzzy to be sure.

The Concertgebouw clarinetists have all played reform Boehm instruments for at least 30 years, so until I see for sure, I'll assume that Meertens does too.
