First let me say I haven't played clarinet for over 50 years when I was doubling
out of local 47 in Hollywood. So when I stumbled onto two clarinets in a single case at a garage sale it brought back memories. If anyyone has info on these
I would appreciate it.The Bb is a Buffet which also says "Chalafant cie"I can't make out the model # but it is S something.Whaley Royce &Co. is enscribed
on the back of the tube that fits into the bell. There looks to be a very small crack that has been filled with something.
The large instrument, which I presume is an A,says H Bettoney,Boston. The only numbers are B26326.It is 28 inches long counting the mouthpiece. This one has no cracks. The wood on both is almost black, perhaps a tinge of redness but I may be imagining things. We have no tech on Maui so I need an indication of whether it is worthwhile to mail them somewhere. Both need pads.If I get them fixed I will donate them to needy students in the local community band.I am almost ashamed to say I paid $2.00 for both and a decent case.

It's difficult to say anything about the Buffet without a closer look at the trademark and the keys. If you can post photographs, it would help. Take an old, damp toothbrush and scrub the gunk out of the trademark and the serial number, which will be on the back of the instrument, at the bottom of the two main joints on newer instruments, or possibly at the top on older instruments.

Cracks in the bell or at the bottom of the lower joint are difficult to repair, because the wood is thin, but they can be glued.

Depending on age and condition, the Buffet could be worth several hundred dollars. The Bettoney would go for around $100 but could be useful as a first A clarinet for a high school player.

If there is a mouthpiece labelled "Bettoney," it could be a Chedeville and worth more than both clarinets combined.

Whaley & Royce was a music retailer based in Toronto, many years ago.
