Hello,
I've been out of the teaching loop for about 8 years now. I agreed to teach a neighbor's kid the other day. I hope I don't regret it! So, what is the best book to have a student learn from nowadays? I've got a lot of really good old books, but don't want to part with them. The book should be in print now and one that she can purchase. Thanks.

Rubank is good, but if the kid is at all "impatient" to play "songs" (i.e. tunes they already know) it can seem a little dry. You could supplement with other items.
I actually prefer a couple of books commonly used for several school bands in my area (Mpls/St Paul). They're called "Clarinet Student," and the first and second in the series are actually rather good in terms of the tunes. You may feel free to disregard most of the (very little) verbal advice in them, however, since I've found it to be largely inaccurate.

I use the Rubank Elementary Method until the student can play a little and then switch to the Rubank Supplementary Studies, a fantastic little book of etudes. After that the student can get through a variety of books and choosing methods becomes easier. The problem with elementary books is that they are either boring and instructive (Rubank) or tuneful where the progress is SLOW! I choose the boring Rubank. Incedentally, I wonder what it would take to get the publishers of the Rubank to update its look and bring it into the 21st century? Does it really need that Albert fingering chart?

Do you have a source for the Galper books? I've looked at Jeanne and WWBW, but don't see them either place. I'll keep looking, unless you beat me to the punch. Thanks. See you in Atlanta? I just finished practicing, using your wonderful barrel, of course.

I also use Clarinet Student by Fred Weber, along with Clarinet Note speller, also by Weber. I think its Belwin or Warner Bros - but I haven't kept up all the mergers in the publishers...
After 8-10 months I switch to the Rubank supplemental studies book. Thats followed by the Melodious and Progressive Studies (book 1) Hite/Southern Music.
The Rubank Elementary method teaches them all of the fundamentals - but it is boring for young students. They need something fun or they quickly lose interest, thus my use of the Weber book, it is full of short little tunes, many of which they recognize. It would be better if it was updated with more recent pop tunes - Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc., e.g, current movie and tv tunes.

I also second the Fred Weber and also the Galper. Yes, Luyben's would be a great source as pointed out-they are awesome and have almost anything you could ever want, so keep them in mind.

Galper's method books aren't for everybody.
I have used them, based on advice from this board, and find that they advance too fast for some young beginners who don't have a lot of background in music.

Ben, Check out beginning clarinet methods by James Collis and (?) Hendrickson. Both give a very solid foundation, with a more contemporary twist than the good old Rubank. The Collis book, particularly, gives the new clarinetist a good dose of clarinet history and culture -- makes interesting reading even for old dogs like me!

I think Galper moves too fast for most students, especially those students that don't practice much. Eighth notes in the second lesson is way too early, and students get 16th notes and cut time by the middle of the book. I have been finding that many of the exercises are too difficult for beginners, so I usually end up doing only one or two per lesson number of them with students.
I personally like Paul Harris' Clarinet Method. The pieces and exercises give students lots of confidence, scales and arpeggios are included within the method, there are also plenty of written exercises.
