I've been listening to some beautiful Taragot music. Can anyone recommend sheet music for the instrument that would also sound good on clarinet? And I would be interested to know what key the tarogot is pitched in. Thanks.

I *think* (but am not certain) that it is the same pitch as a soprano sax.

Yup, David, it is just like a soprano sax. Which is, of course, the same as a soprano Bb clarinet!
The difference is that the taragot does not have the same lower range as a clarinet. It is, in essence, a wooden soprano sax.
Beejay, I'm afraid the only music I know for taragot is transmitted orally. There may be some newer "compositions" which are less folk and more "art" music, but those are not in my knowledge base.

There is a very good article on the tárogató in the latest issue of the UK magazine "Clarinet & Saxophone". It is one of the national instruments of Hungary; it is also played in that part of Romania which used to belong to Hungary, where it is called the "tarogat". Originally it had a double reed, but around 1895 it was redesigned and fitted with a clarinet mouthpiece. It was made in many sizes from sopranino to bass, but the soprano in Bb seems to have been the most popular. The instrument had two speaker keys (like the oboe) and you transferred to the second speaker at A (again like the oboe). The bottom note is Bb, played by a key for the right thumb.
