Piece for Clarinet and Concert Band

My band is going to The Midwest Clinic next year (huge thing, www.midwestclinic.com) and my director has been thinking about having a soloist on a piece. I want to get a step ahead of him and present him with some great pieces that I could play. I am strongly considering Rossini Intro Theme & Variations, but I'm sure there have been great pieces that have been written for clarinet and wind ensemble. Not including the great orchestral concertos that may have a good band arrangement written. What are some good ones? Thanks in advance!

There is a great piece that I heard in a concert for clarinet and wind ensemble. I am pretty sure the composer was John Hines but I dont know if it is published. I thought it was a really awesome piece. If you can find out about this piece then it is deffinetly better than a transcription for band or the Rimsky Korsakov.

The Rimsky-Korsakov is a snoozer. The Hines is a great piece, very difficult. Do a search, this topic has been touched about a thousand times.

Why not have a go at playing the Artie Shaw Concerto with your concert band, it's a winner with audiences and band alike - having played it a hundred times to many different audiences I can tell you they'll love it.

Cavallini's 'Adagio and Tarantella' is a typical show-off piece pretty much in the Italian operatic tradition arranged for clarinet and concert band, it doesn't do much for me (being operatic - likewise with all Italian opera), but it's one of those technical excercise pieces I'm sure someone will love.

Concertino Warren Barker
Solo de Concours Henri Rabaud
Rahoon Alfred Reed
Concerto Rimsky-Korsakoff
Carnival of Venice ?

Three Blind Mice ?

Is there an arrangement of the Artie Shaw concerto with concert band? If anybody knows about it, please let me know.

Just listened to the Shaw, it's great. I adore the Bernstein, I (and all of my friends) would love to play it. Does anyone have a rec of the Grange and/or Ellerby? Especially the Grange, it seems very interesting. Thanks a ton.

Is that Bernstein's 'Prelude, Fugue and Riffs'?

And try Stravinsky's 'Ebony Concerto'.

The John Heins "Concerto for Clarinet and Band" is a great piece. It's a bit of a challenge, but not impossible. It was discussed recently on the KLARINET list, where someone mentioned that it had been published. When I played it, it was from a borrowed set of manuscript parts.

James Curnow has a piece, "Concertpiece" (?), that is quite good. Very practical writing, and a flashy piece.

I've heard a recording of the Ellerby. the orchestration of the band part is a bit thick, and causes problems for balance with the soloist in places. Also, IMO, a bit long for what it is.

David McClune, who mostly (I think) follows the KLARINET list, has a big list of clarinet & band pieces. Since he has a mouthpiece business, I'd think a Google search would get you in touch with him for more information.
