hi! I just got this piece to play as an audition coz our orchestra is doing it next year. It really looks simple until you actually start playing. The problem is with the 2nd movement big solo before the oboe, measure 66. The notes and rhythm are the simplest thing ever, but it's VERY easy to run out of breath since there's no rest for the whole solo. Also, there's a 5 measure bit that always leave me breathless for the next phrase. Or else I'll just play 2nd clarinet! I think Schubert writes really well for the woodwinds in this symphony... I'm jealous of the oboist.

Work on long tones like there is no tomorrow! The Schubert is just about the hardest piece there is from a breathing standpoint. If the conductor goes a moderate tempo, you should be able to make it through the solo. On the other hand, if the conductor is a slow-poke, you will want to breathe just before the last two eighth notes going into the high B.

Lori, try to play the solo with your most soft reed and try to relax yourself. Practice it until you can play with only one breathing.
