Hey everyone,
I'm having trouble keeping my left hand 12ths in tune. When my instrument is cold, my scale is somewhat even. But as I warm up, my tone gets sharper so I pull out. After doing so, I find that my throat tones all the way down to left hand C is about 10-15 cents flat, while my left hand upper notes from G up to C are 10-15 cents sharp. Is this a common problem and is there any way to alleviate it through technique or repair? My setup is a Bb Buffet Festival, Greg Smith Chicago Kaspar, and 3.5 V12 reeds. I appreciate any of your advice.

Aftermarket barrels often boast about bringing the 12ths closer in tune (the left hand twelfths). From what I read on this board and hear in RL, it's common, and you can look to aftermarket barrels as a possible solution. (Moenigg barrels, chadash, walter grabner, alseg, etc. etc.)

Before you go down the after-market barrel trail have another good player (your teacher??) test your set-up.
The problem could be the equipment or, with respect, you. I have played Buffet Festivals extensively; the intonation problems you describe are not characteristic of this model.

Larger bore mouthpieces similar to the design of Frank Kaspar would require the reverse cone tapered barrel to deal with the issues you describe. I think that you should definitely contact Greg Smith.

On my Buffet, its the lower 12ths that are wide; and changing barrels had no effect on the tuning of the instrument.

I have found that the proper tuning ring(s) to fill in the gap caused by pulling out improves the tuning of the 12th around 10-15 cents from the top to bottom. And it also subjectively improves the sound quality and response of the instrument. I use them for both the upper and middle joint of the instrument for this reason. I bought them from Selmer USA and Muncy Winds.
However, this may not work with your setup, but give it a try. Make sure the inner diameter of the tuning ring does not protude into the bore and that you can see no tuning ring when you view through the bore. You want the bore to be smooth.
