I am trying to decide where to go to school as an undergraduate next year. Of the schools I have been accepted to I have narrowed it down to two---Northwestern and New England Conservatory. I really would like to hear some opinions on which school/professor would be better....so is it appropriate for me to mention who I would be studying with at each school? If not, general opinions on which school would be better for someone who wants to be an orchestral clarinetist would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, congrats on the acceptances. Two fine institutions located in two incredible cities.

But yes, the specific professor would make a great difference. At NEC, for example, the clarinet department might seem as a hit-or-miss. Tom Martin, Craig Nordstrom, and William Wrzesien teach there (I read on this board before that Stoltzman does not actually take on any students). Now, all three of those have terrific professional credentials, but only one of those three is believed to be a great, top-tier teacher. Another one is a decent choice as well. But I've been told been by reliable contacts that one of those three should be completely avoided. I'm not going to announce who it is or who told this to me, but this gives you an idea of the hit-or-miss-'ness, even in the case where they have great credentials and reputations.

PS - it is May 4, and isn't it a little late to be still deciding? I hope you've sent in tuition deposits for both schools! Big-name colleges like these two definately don't mess around - they're serious about those wait lists.

And finally, I'll be also attending NEC this fall - for composition.
