 Breaking in new clarinet
Author: Old Geezer

I did a search on this BB , without much
satisfaction, for advice on breaking in a new
clarinet.

Does anyone know a URL I could use or
something on this BB I've overlooked?

Thanks....

If the clarinet is wood then depending upon the climatic conditions where you live it is best not to play it for too long for a few weeks. Also lightly oil the bore to prevent cracking. There is another view, one not without some merit. If the instrument is under guarantee, presumably it is, if it is new, then giving it a good work out will bring to light any faults in the woodwork and if they appear better to be under guarantee than not.
However, playing a clarinet 'in' may take several years and may need, from time to time some tweaking by an expert as the materials settle.
I would imagine that plastic clarinets, for all their limitations, would be more durable if less yielding to the playing in process.
Most importantly it is wise to get an outside ear to listen to your clarinet to ensure that all is in order. I hope that this may be of some help to you, and i feel sure that many others have their own thoughts and experiences to hand on. Best of luck - Robin

I'm breaking in a new YCL-450 and the procedure I'm using can be found at this link: http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/Care/Break-in.html
