Is it me or is it the clarinet
Author: YCL-450

I've been playing a nearly new YCL-450 now for about 3 weeks and it seems like the tone has suddenly improved quite a bit. It's like it's waking up. But is this the clarinet or me.

Perhaps your horn is getting broken in nicely, or maybe you're just getting better.

Maybe you're getting better and figuring out how to play the thing. All different brands have different "G" spots and it can take a month or so to really figure out the best reed mouthpiece combo and embouchure to use on it. When I originally tried the SEV, I liked the sound and tuning, but it was about a month till I really figured out how to get it to really sing!

You're probably just getting used to playing your instrument and bringing out all the colors of the tone. The wood does begin to season and should get better as you play.

If it's bad, it's always the instrument's fault; if it's good, it's always the player.

I normally blame it on the reed. If my backup Légère squeaks too, then I know it's time for a stroll or a beer. :)

It took me about a month to halfway safely hit the "sweet spot" on the reed. The improvement in tone was dramatic.

If this is the first experience to play clarinet, it's your improvement definitely because you started from zero.

If a player has played for long period, sometimes he feels his playing better, sometimes worse. Wind playing is very much affected by body/mental conditions.

Maybe the crack has closed up.
