Manfred Weise of Dresden Staatskapelle is my favourite. Such beauty of the German school of playing is rarely heard nowadays.

My favourite recording is by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Richard Hosford clarinettist - a great listen, such a fine musician and player. It beats the Combs by a mile, IMHO.

I honestly prefer Mr. Hosford's playing and recordings to Mr. Combs's.
I have heard both live may times, both are great talents, but Mr. Hosford (in my mind) is a much better musician.
IMHO:
Mr. Combs has a beautiful sound and is note perfect and much more refined in some ways than Mr. Hosford, but frankly I find Mr. Combs's playing a bit dull and 2 dimensional, not a lot of variety of movement in the sound and musicianship - something I have always felt about his playing in general.
Mr. Hosford may be a bit more rough in some respects, but he is a very natural musician and has an incredible variety of colours in his tonal palette and musicianship. He puts music first and will push the sound and interpretation to achieve his goals, at the expense of perhaps some small details. I personally find that more exciting.
They obviously come from very different cultures and strive for very different things in their playing - which is correct or better, who knows?
As for this particular recording comparison, both are GREAT, but I honestly prefer to listen to the COE and Hosford, thats just me.
That is my opinion, I know there are many folks who will disagree with me and some who will agree, but thats what BBoards are for I suppose.

Don't be concerned with what others think. Your points were well made and you took the time to elaborate on your initial opinion. That is what bulletin boards are for.

Its funny how people get their hackles up if you suggest a non-American recording ... so here goes: Rudolf Kempe's recording with Dresden orchestra - can't beat it. Sorry, can't remember who the soloists are off the top of my head.

Kempe's recording is exactly the recording I suggested. The clarinet soloist is Manfred Weise... and yes, unbeatable.
Actually, there is also an out-of-print recording of Heinrich Geuser, Karl Leister's teacher, playing the piece with the RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester under Ferency Fricsay. Wonderful playing but not too good recording quality.....

Mr. Leister ... I own the complete Kempe cycle of Strauss' orchestral works - there isn't one dodgy one in the set, to be sure.
