 Buffet Bass

Does anyone know if Buffet subcontract out the manufacturing of its low Eb, student model bass clarinet? I believe the model number is 1180.

Anyone here owned or played one? How does it compare to the other low Eb model, 1183? Do they share similar keywork and mechanism?

I know the low C 1193 is the big daddy of Buffet bass, but for someone on budget or doesn't need the low C, are the 1180 and1183 good options?

Thanks.

I would classify the 1180 as an intermediate model, rather than student. Some years ago I tried a new one side-by-side with a top-of-the-line low-C 1193 model, and the cheaper 1180 actually played better. Probably worth trying a couple of them out if you can find them. I believe it has the less-desirable single-register-vent design, similar to most Leblancs/Noblets, but also like those instruments, a certain percentage play very well nonetheless. The 1183, I think, is a double-vent design identical to the 1193 other than lacking the extended range.

I am not the player and technician that David is, but I have been interested in the same question you are. I play the Buffet 1180 and 1193 and 1183 at any show I go to, just to see if I can discern a difference. I've never been able to play an 1180 side by side with an 1193. But I know what a stuffy upper register is like. The last time I played the 1180 I was very pleased with its response; it seemed as smooth and easy as any bass I've played.

What David said about the single and double register vents on the different models is all correct. The 1183 and the 1193 are indeed the same horn, except for the range.

Do a search here about the model. I remember as least one writer saying he had one and was very pleased.
