There were a few people asking about the Walter Grabner faced Chris Hill Blank I have. I did not want to post a review right after getting it, so now that I have had a chance to really play with it for a little while I feel I can give it a fair review.
My set up
-Selmer 10G
-Grabner/Hill Mpc
-Oliveri Elite #3.5
-VD Klassik ligature
Pros
-Very dark, smooth tone
-Very even tuning
-good projection
-easy articulation
-Altissimo control
Cons
-Takes alot of air
-not particularly resonant.
- initially resistant.
The facing is similar to Walter's K13, but with a longer lay to accomadate the Oliveri Elites I use. It also works well with VD V12 and RP 56 reeds. The tone is the darkest I have ever had. It really helps keep the upper clarion and altissimo dark. The scale is much more even than with the M13 I was playing. Fast passages, especially high ones are more clean.
Initially I had alot of trouble with the amount of air it took, coming of a very nice M13 and an even more easy playing selmer C95. But after a week and half I got very comfortable with the extra air. The other thing that could be better is resonance, I guess tats sort of a trade off for all the darkness. The one reason I almost bought a Fobes Cicero, but this plays better in the other aspects.
I would like to thank both Walter and Chris for their support and work on this. I think I have my main mouthpiece for a long time.
