I have a chadash barrel for both my A and Bb Buffet R13 clarinets. my A barrel is 66mm, and my Bb is 65mm. I love the sound of my Bb with its barrel, but the sound of my A clarinet with its barrel is much rougher. Today I tried my Bb barrel with my A clarinet and it sound much better. Now my tone on my A and my Bb are about the same(other then the obvious changes of key and size). I know one other person who uses the same barrel on both her Bb and A. If intonation is still good on the A with the Bb barrel, is this a socially acceptable thing to do?

FYI--The shorter barrel is probably the A barrel. I regularily use my A barrel on my Bb because it is then easier to switch to my A clarinet by moving both barrel and mp as one unit (rather than just the mp alone). You can then adjust tuning by pulling the mp to tune the A clarinet. Then move the barrel and mp to the Bb and tune by pulling the barrel a bit and leaving the mp in the same position it was for the A clarinet, barrel pushed all the way on. This system works for me--give it a try. In any case, I agree with Mark, if the barrel works, WHO CARES!!!!

I would guess about two years ago, someone (and I can't remember who it was) reported that he had borrowed a whole mess of barrels from his repair person and tried them all on his A and Bb. He found one wonderful barrel which was the best of the lot on both instruments, and had the advantage mentioned above that he could switch barrel and mouthpiece, avoiding the problem of having the ligature come off in his hand, and being able to start with just that much more of the instrument at the proper temperature. If it works, do it!
