 Flute Forum here?

So we have clarinet and oboe? Why not flute? There isn't a hardcore flute forum like this clarinet board. It would be nice to have one.

On that note, i'm so happy I gotta say it. I aquired a Brannen Mellenium body with C sharp trill, E mech and D sharp roller... for 4500!!!! Any flute player would understand I just got an amazing deal... hmm time for gold headjoint shopping..

Seconded.

And I acquired a Gemeinhardt M2S (solid silver) for 35 bucks... [tongue]

If there's enough interest I'll put one up ... but I thought there were other venues for flautists already ...

There are several others, scattered around.

IMO all of them have their significant detractors, such as personal attack, poor format, irrational condemnation of anything technical, posts wiped apparently because of a forums connections with flute marketers, serious slander of yours-truly - thankfully that particular totally-out-of-control forum was eventually put to rest! - domination by individuals who have no idea how much they don't know, and in the quite recent past, snobbery, mockery, lack of respect for anonymity, etc. Colourful, and sometimes dangerous places. Perhaps these forums highlight just how much work is done behind the scenes by the moderator both here and on saxontheweb.net

The bulk of young flute players seem to be a different type of animal from sax and clarinet players.

These flute forums seem to demonstrate the downside of having several rather insignificant forums, rather than one major one.

Actually, a doublers' forum would be nice, with topics like how to prevent back strain from carrying too many instruments (seriously......carrying (not to mention playing) a bari with anything else is a vile, cruel piece of torture), as well as tricks of the trade of other instruments than clarinet......

I would love for there to be a flute forum here if only that in time it could become a wealth of information and with a good dose of moderation become as well regarded as the Clarinet forum.

There is not an actively moderated flute forum, but there are many mailing lists which are moderated, but out of the grasp of many.

Now about that oboe forum... it would be nice if there were some sort of direct link to it on the main page of woodwind.org. Sure, it probably won't stir much activity, but I don't know how people find the board (Honestly I'm quite shocked the DoubleReed List is still active!). Perhaps adding bassoon to the forum name or renaming it "double-reed" forum may help highlight the oboe forum as an inclusive group.

As a doubler on clarinet and flute I would welcome either a separate flute board or a division of this board, whatever is technically easier.

flute.com and 8notes.com are two flute boards that I have found, but they don't seem to have a lot of posts.

Couldn't bassoons simply share with the woodwind.org oboe forum?

I find some die-hard flute players/enthusiasts a strange bunch - when I got my Yamaha 674 a flute player I know with a handmade flute (FMG) slated it due to the amount of adjusting screws it had (and there I wa thinking it could do with more!) and said 'adjusing screws make it look cheap'

I don't see what concern it is for this (or any) player if it has adjusting screws or not considering he never takes a screwdriver to it himself, and always has someone I worked with service it every year - and the chap that does all the servicing work on it makes flutes himself, and his flutes are loaded with adjustments as it's easier to regulate with screw adjustments than using shims or bending things or whatever some mega expensive flutes have by means of regulating when they don't have adjusters - and it's more expensive to fit adjusting screws than having none, though regulating a flute without them probably takes ages to get right.

I dread to think what he thinks of my Marigaux cor anglais which has over thirty adjusting screws on it - and it certainly wasn't 'cheap'!

I wish saxes had more adjusting screws as well, shame Yamaha don't load their Custom saxes with them as they do from the 62 series downwards, though I can always add them myself with little trouble if I wanted to.

I think that other flute player was really ignorant.

Well-designed adjusting screws are far preferable to not having them, for many reasons.

To omit them on ANY very high precision mechanism that NEEDS periodic adjustment is engineering stupidity, perpetuated only by the demands of a snob market (of which he is clearly a member), who have more money than sense.

PS. When I bought my "hand-made" (whoopy-doo!), no-adjusting-screws flute, I was equally ignorant. If there were enough metal there to fit adjusting screws, then I would have done so long ago.
