Hi Y'all,
Just returned from a six-mo checkup from my "Rhuumy" who has now set up a referal to a restorative hand surgeon. Seems like my right hand and wrist are flawed (can hardly use the right 'pinky keys' on my BC as my last two fingers refuse to cooperate and work together). Surgery? And then he said " Don't wait until the end of golf season to get it done. Gee, and I just paid my league fees. This is not an ad, just a comment--Dave, what's my Bass worth? This is not a plea, not a moan just an update. More later (After my 8 May visit).

Hang in there, Bob, yup, advancing age does bring on infirmities, mine are more in mind than hands and other "physicals", but am trying [gracefully] now by switching to alto cl more than bass. Our best wishes, Don

Is there some way a tech can alter the pinky mechanisms to make them more ergometric for you?

I was so relieved to have a teen-age correspondent complain about a locked pinky while playing.
I'm considering just chopping off the first (end) joint of my RH pinky so that it'll fit my Buffet. Mayby a finger-tip ring with a lump on the bottom to shorten the darn thing so i don't have to curl it up to reach the long E.

Dont do it, Bob P, 'taint worth it ! Have you relocated your thumbrest higher ? [inversion or adjustable?] . I found I could more easily use the rt E/B touch with upside down TRs on most of my cls, as an added benefit to pain relief. Try it , its cheap. Don

As they say, Bob, Old age is not for wimps. I was considering teeth implants but backed out at the $20,000 level. The clarinet can be played without teeth and yields a tone that is not of this earth. Surely you can get along without a pinky or two. .....consider Django Reinhardt. Good Luck, bob.

Well, I've already got a false upperplate (look like Popeye when I play without it--but that works). Had the "Rotorouter" job as well--didn't help my tone a bit!

On my Bb I've tried to get around slipping and inaccurate pinky problems with the LH spatula keys by sticking bits of cut up mouthpiece patches onto the F#/C# and F/C - it helps for me. Also plugged up the LH Eb/Bb sliver key - far fewer squeaks now.
I use a really nice plateau key clarinet most of the time now. Still looking for the elusive plateau A clarinet. They do exist - someone was writing about a French one (but not selling) on ebay last week. I'd consider an alto if a good repertoire existed for them - even if they are akin with violas!

I have messed around with my thumb rest. I LOWERED it in order to get the side of my right hand forefinger away from the Eb trill key. Fewer squeaks now.
On my Buffet, if the right hand F#C# and E/B keys were up where the G#/D# and F/C are located, I'd be much better off. My teacher has to keep encouraging me to use the the RH long B --which I avoid because of the RH pinky awkwardness.
