Hello

Just some p.m. thoughts. Which do you use, a clarinet stand or a clarinet peg and why?? Please list brand and comment on design.

Thanks
Clayton

Pegs. Because I tend to play up to 3 clarinets. The K&M with spots for 4 pegs is pretty nice.

I use my adapted K&M double oboe/cor anglais pegs for my clarinets, and have brought them in closer than they were originally as well as fitted a third peg so there's now a row of three pegs - useful if doubling on oboe, cor and clarinet - or oboe, oboe d'amore and cor - or A, Bb and Eb (or C) clarinets.

Though I've made a thick high density foam spacer to go on one of the oboe pegs so an oboe d'amore or Eb clarinet can be used without the peg jamming in the bell or bore.

I use a set of modular stands made from maple by an oboist here in Toronto. I have single, double or triple bases. my Eb peg has a riser so it's almost as tall as the Bb and A. He makes great pegs for oboe, EH, CA and flute as well.

Claritone,

If you play only one clarinet at gigs, then I'd recommend a K&M stand. I have one, and it is very light to carry with and doesn't take much space.

Also, check out www.music123.com; this shop has a nice stand for clarinets, but it is not K&M (I forgot what the brand is).

Good luck!

I don't play in public, but for practice at home, I use a stand with multiple pegs for soprano clarinets and of course stands for alto and contra-alto, since there's no alternative for those bigger instruments. I couldn't find any pro stand for an alto clarinet, so I slightly modified an alto saxophone stand. The biggest change was to add the business end of a rubber toilet plunger, open side up, for the bell of the alto to rest in. Got that idea from the stand for my contra-alto. I did take the trouble to find a *black* toilet plunger so the origin might not be quite so obvious....

And they're perfect for making Daleks as well.

Leila, do you have a floor spike attached to your alto? Only reason I ask is as this is at the same playing height as a bass clarinet with the spike attached, a K&M bassoon/bass clarinet stand works well with these (and basset horns).

The K&M stands are very nice, and as they use regualr dimension hardware so if you need custom pegs the'yre pretty easy to fabricate (I usually have at least three recorders at the ready in addition to my Klingon Pain Stick

No, my alto clarinet has no peg. It's a 1979 Selmer Paris alto, the type with two rings for a two-hooked neck strap, an arrangement I find reasonably comfortable. I like that K&M bassoon-bass stand a lot. That's what I bought for my contra-alto (a Bundy), and it provided the model for modifying the alto sax stand for my alto clarinet.

I completely agree with GBK!!! There is nothing better than the Blaymans. They are a bit on the heavy side, but that is why they are so darn good. I carry them to every gig I do. Your horns are worth it.

I'll third that recomendation for Blayman pegs.

This is like death and taxes. It's a sure bet that Blayman pegs are the absolute, no argument, bestest way to hold a clarinet.

If only more things about the clarinet were this clear cut.

Fourth vote for Blayman. The K&M is fine until you or someone else hits the clarinet with a knee (which careless me has done). Then it's time for prayer that nothing broke when the clarinet hit the ground.
