 Exams and Examiners....

This probably won't get an answer - and I don't blame you for that. Do any of you students out there find clarinet examiners congratulate what you play wrong in an exam? AND, don't mention a thing when you play something perfectly? This keeps on happening to me, and I'm wondering if it keeps happening to some other students.
To all examiners out there: I'd love to know just what the procedure is. Are you supposed to ease off the pressure on the student by encouraging them? Or, have them take the exam under maximum pressure?
(I am reffering to practical clarinet exams taken in the UK)
- I'm sure there are some interesting stories out there about exams.....

When I've had collegiate auditions in the past two years, when I am ready to leave, I've always received a complement. These have consisted of "I heard tonguing," and "getting better." However, when I had all-state auditions, the adjudicators are so intimidating! I hate going in there to audition. Many high schoolers have lack of experience playing for professionals like adjudicators. It would be nice if they eased up and complemented their efforts.
College professors are adjudicators, but I could never think of them that way because I know them so well. They are not ogres and are not out to get us. The adjudicators/examiners should be looked at the same way. They have lives outside what they are doing in that room now. They are there to evaluate your playing, not tear it apart. After all, who is our biggest critic? That judge sitting in that room, or ourselves. In my book, it's me. When I know I do something wrong, I tear myself apart. The examiner or judge is there to tell us where we need to improve. These things just get easier too!

Good luck.

Hi,

I think examiners do compliment you when you play badly to make you feel better. When you need to worry is when you get a tight-lipped "Thank you"

Some examiners can be quite nice though, when I took my grade 2 clarinet I was 13 and shoking so badly I almost dropped my clarinet and the examiner made me sit down and drink a glass of water before playing! On the other hand, 6 months later my grade 3 examiner told me to stop wasting time by taking a few deep breaths then attempted to get me to play scales from the wrong grade! Now, the examiners are much more formal though. I think they think that by the time you are taking grade 6+ you should be able to control your fear and deal with your mistakes so they are less friendly, also failing a higher grade is more likely to qffect you in the sense of auditions etc. because as you get higher you compete more.

Just my ramblings,

Chloe
