 Weight Loss enhancing performance

I'm having better performances and auditions than I probably have had in a very long time.

I'm sure part of this is a developed and consistent work ethic that I have regained over this school year but I think a bigger reason is because of 30 pounds that I have lost since January.

Maybe others have gone through this as well but I feel that I look better thus I feel more confident on stage and not thinking so much like "I'm this fat blob on stage playing my clarinet".

Furthermore from doing the 2 hours of cardio work I do everday, my breathing capacity has improved dramatically.

Does this make sense or do I seem delusional?

This makes perfect sense. Exercising regularly is good for your body, and and a sound body contributes to a sound mind. As a musician, I think it is very important to recognize this since so much of what we do is mental... One note though: I don't think your breathing capacity is significantly greater because of the cardiovascular exercise you've been doing. I do think that you're improving how you use your respiratory system, i.e. you're getting used to filling more of your lungs with air than you used to. You're just using more of the capacity you always had.

More than likely it's just that your body is becoming more efficient at using the oxygen and distributing it throughout your body and so you don't have to breathe as often to keep the same amount of oxygen circulating through your blood. (you've built up more white blood cells). So you would become out of breath less, and therefore can really concentrate on blowing that air out through the clarinet without getting winded. Just me trying to apply what I've learned in my classes.

Also, as per working out, it is proven to boost your immune system, and also (as you've told us) your confidence tends to go up. Which means you feel better and perform better. In pretty much all areas of life.

We recently had a sub clarinetist play 2nd clarinet with our orchestra.

Although she played well, she was severely overweight.

It was obvious that the extra weight had a negative effect on her endurance and breath control. This was especially noticeable in long phrases.

She tired easily and often was not able to hold long notes to their complete value.

Aside from the medical consequences of the excess weight, from a purely musical perspective her playing was severely compromised...GBK

Congratulations on the weight loss!

I have lost around 30 lbs myself (still going), but I don't know if I've noticed a huge difference in my playing. Yes, I do look better than I did before so that gives me a little more confidence I guess. The area I noticed most improved though was marching band. I had more endurance and I could play more while marching than usual.

I'm currently in an Aerobics and Weight Training PE class at school and it's helped me! I notice that I can breathe deeper and fuller, although I'm coughing a lot more in choir which is the next hour. Also, my muscles are building strength and that could somehow help holding the clarinet for longer periods of time. I don't know about that one.

Even without any musical benefits, proper diet and exercise are key for everyone! Now doing it is the hard part.
