 Clarinet reeds...on soprano sax !?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an ad in a recent issue of "The Clarinet" I read that Branford Marsalis used a clarinet reed on his soprano sax to play the Copeland Concerto. It never occured to me before, but for giggles I just tried a clarinet reed on my soprano...now one experiment is certainly no proof of anything, but while I was playing, my local critic ( my wife) peeked in and said my soprano sounded unusually nice.....I agree....it's hard to describe, but I felt contol, sound, feel, everything improved with the clarinet reed ! So am I full of hot air or has anyone else tried clarinet reeds on soprano? I've never heard of the practice before now.

Maybe the long scrape of a clarinet reed (in comparison to the short scrape on a soprano sax reed) has something to do with it.

Now, does a Tarogato use a clarinet or soprano sax reed?

Re sax mpc: Why is the sax mpc's window round at the tenon side while the clarinet's is squarely cut?

Funny you say that - the old Yamaha YCL-24 I bought came with it's original mouthpiece - and it had a short, round window - almost like that of a soprano sax.

But it's a good way of telling which instrument I've used a certain reed on before (on bass clarinet and tenor sax) - I've found reeds in my tenor case with a square shape on the underside as well as finding reeds in my bass clarinet case with the rounded shape on them. So somewhere along the line I've been unconsciously swapping reeds around.

The opinions I express are my own.

I have always used clarinet reeds on my soprano sax. Whenever I felt a reed was too worn out for my clarinet, it went into my soprano sax reed collection...and the old, rejected clarinet reeds worked perfectly.

I recently purchased a soppy sax from (he knows who he is) and I am going to try this tonight! I have a few problems getting to the lower register. I have to really sneak up on those low notes.

I just had to add this before the post disappears. I tried a clarinet reed and it solved all my problems. Couldn't believe it! Last week I was thinking if somebody would invent an adapter for a clarinet mouthpiece to fit onto a soprano sax, it would be a wonderful invention.

Before this happened:
1.When I played, all the feral cats in the neighborhood disappeared.
2.The neighbors went to their getaway cabin much more frequently.
3.The dog sat at my feet when I was practicing the soprano sax looking expectantly at the end of the instrument just waiting for something wonderfully horrid and gruesome to fall out that she could chomp on.

Thanks so much for this advice - worth gold to me!

Eb or Bb reeds? Bb soprano sax mp's are smaller than Bb clarinet mp's.

If using a clarinet reed will make me play like Branford then of course I will try it. :)

I used a Bb reed. It is long but that is okay, it still fits. The width is the same.

Actually, the soprano sax reed is wider and built on a different model template than Bb clarinet reeds.

Care should be taken to make sure that your Bb reeds extend to the rails of your soprano sax mouthpiece.

If the Bb reeds are too narrow, the soprano sax mouthpiece, when played, will squeek or chirp...GBK

You can use a Bb clarinet mouthpiece on a soprano sax, just slide it over the cork. If it's too loose then put some paper round the cork.
