Went to see/hear Quartetto Gelato here in town last night.
Cynthia Steljes: Oboe/English Horn, Elinor Frey: Cello, Peter DeSotto: Violin/Mandolin (not used last nite)/Tenor voice, Alexander Sevatian: Accordian.

They had their whole program memorized. They moved chairs around on stage, and (except for the cello player) frequently stood to play.
Intonation beautiful. Awesome musicianship. Cellist and violinist are playing on instruments on loan as rewards for competitions won. Accordianist is a 3-time world champion. All have degrees in performance.
Music by Flanders/Swann, GAnnon/Biraud, Ravel, Piaf/Louiguy, von Weber,
Handel/Halvorson, Brahms, David Popper (the Rose 32 of cellists), Hossovits, Lehar, Kodaly, Dinzi.
Very much worth a listen even though the oboe and accordian usurped the clarinet parts.

I remember well - it was about three or four years ago when this group was set to play for the Bowling Green State University Concert Series. I told Nancy that I did not think I could stand listening to the group - the the accordian is never in tune - could we sit this one out ?" After some discussion we decided to go after,all we had the option to politely leave during the intermission.
Well - - - after the first five or so bars, I wanted to take them home and feed them. They were fantastic - including the accordian. I recommend a hearing - they are wonderful, wonderful musicians.

FYI: The "usual" pitch for an accordion is A=444 or so. They're just as in tune with themselves as a piano is (just temperament), but if an accordionist is playing with another fixed-pitch instrument, intonation will be a problem.
If the accordion is well-maintained, it should be in tune. Some are tuned more "wet" with a French musette-style sound which is intentionally slightly out of tune with itself. This is not "Accordions in general."
As long as strings and winds tune to the higher-pitched accordion, everything sounds great!

(I play with an accordionist rather a lot; I had to buy a shorter barrel to compensate when the clarinet is cold!)

I have only heard Q G via FM CD playing, but yes they are V G ! I partic. listen to oboists [no place to hide] and C S does it beautifully. They played at our local OK Mozart several years ago, I believe, well received, and may again in June, hopefully, will attend. Good Group, music by diff. composers ! Don
