This year I audtioned for a chance to play with orchestra and I lost. *sob* Needless to say, I am not a happy camper and I feel that Weber has let me down. I have every intention of winning this thing next year (in my FIFTH year of college) and I am now looking for a piece to start working on.
I have been discussing this with Brian over email and as he knows, I am trying to keep away from Mozart and Weber... I want something a little different. I am currently looking at the Hindemith concerto and possibly the Debussey Rhapsody.
After listening to the Yo-Yo Ma Solo Cd, I am very interested in finding something with an Asian flair to it. I have been asking around, but no one seems to be able to give me any info.
Anything you could suggest would be great.
Thank you very much!!

Why are you staying away from the Mozart and Weber concerti? They are great pieces and most students have to work on all of them at one time or another.
As for the Hindemith: UGH! I HATE that piece. I think it's the worst of the Hindemith concerti, and I'm not just saying that because one of the other clarinet students beat me with that piece in out school's concerto competition. I by no means speak for the entire clarinet community, but I have yet to meet another clarinetist (professional or amateur) that likes that piece.
And sorry, I can't help you in your search for an Asian-influenced clarinet and orchestra piece. I don't know of any.
Good luck.
