Czech music

Hello,

I'm looking for great pieces for clarinet by Czech composers.

Any suggestions?

Click the "Sheets" tab in the upper left part of the page, then "Browse Instruments" then Clarinet. There are about 30 works listed for various combinations including clarinet. Not all are by Czech composers but most appear to be and the ones that aren't (e.g., Debussy Premier Rhapsody) are pretty easy to tell. Some of the works are 20th century. You can get the sheet music from them if the works aren't readily available from the usual U.S. suppliers.

If you search Amazon for "contemporary czech clarinet" you should turn up a recording with a list of works by Czech composers. The recording is out-of-print but it will give you some titles to search for.

Also, if bass clarinet is a possibility, running Google searches on "duo boemi praga" and "joseph horak" should be fruitful. I know I have seen an extensive list of works composed (many by Czech composers) for one or the other but I don't know if it's still on the web since Joseph Horak passed away.

Speaking of Horak, sad loss... Has his website been updated at all recently?

I am struggling to find/buy his recordings on CD. If anyone knows how, please share.

I saw what I think was Joseph Horak's last concert, and he played a czech piece, I think a sonata for bass clarinet by Janacek. I would guess that a composer that have bass clarinet music definitely have music for clarinet.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I should have mentioned that the concert will be for clarinet, piano, perhaps vocalist, perhaps string players, perhaps percussionist. No large scale works--probably up to a quintet (which would include clarinet and piano) would be the high end of any group.

I'm particularly interested in pieces that someone on this forum may have performed for piano/clar. and others that is excellent.

I'd prefer original compositions, but would consider arrangements.

By the way, I don't play bass clarinet.

You might want to look into the work of Vaclav Nehlybel. He wrote two concerto for clarinet as well as some small ensemble pieces. I remember playing one of his works for clarinet choir many years ago in college, but couldn't tell you much more.
