 My clarinet runs flat!

Hey everybody! I'm new here, but it would be much appreciated if someone could help me out:

Last July I bought a Yamaha Custom clarinet. I have a terrible ear, and when I tried it out at the store with my Bonade ligature, 3.5 Vandorens and 5RV lyre 13 mouthpiece I did not notice how low the instrument ran.

After playing in front of a tuner, I noticed that I was a good twenty cents flat primarily in the clarion register and even perhaps thirty cents flat in the chalemeau.

I have been using my Buffet E11 with the same moutpiece/ligature/reed arrangment in the meantime.

The funny thing is, the Yamaha barrel is really short (shorter than the one with my E 11)

Does anyone have a Yamaha Custom? If so, what arrangement do you use?

Or, perhaps someone can tell me if the issue can be solved by trying different mouthpieces/ligatures/barrels.

Thanks so much!
Penny

I have a feeling you are playing the Yamaha CSG. In fact, I'm 99% sure that is what you are talking about.

I tested these buggers out a few times and they did run flat for me for a period of around 20 minutes. A 442 mp helped to bring the pitch up though. Email Yamaha about your problem and I know they'd be more than happy to mail you some different tapered barrels to try or they might even try to fix the problem with your horn for you.

I went through this same battle before I sent back my CSG.

>5RV lyre 13

thats an A-440 mouthpiece (13 series - a440. non13 series - a442)

Try a non-13 series mouthpiece, e.g., try a 5RV-Lyre and not a 5RV-Lyre-13.

E11's are pitched at A442. A 13 series mouthpiece on an E11 pulls it down close to A440.
