Live broadcast of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto tonight
Author: Dave Beal
Date:   2006-03-19 00:01

Tonight (March 18) at 7:30PM Mountain time. The Colorado Symphony Orchestra with Bil Jackson, soloist. Broadcast live by KVOD (Colorado Public Radio): http://cpr.org/listen/, or 90.1FM if you're in the Denver area. I believe K622 will be the second piece on the program.

The Rocky Mountain News says he will be performing on a basset clarinet: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/music/article/0,2792,DRMN_54_4541462,00.html

Glad you all enjoyed it. The audience clearly did, too. Even we Colorado cowboys who applaud between movements appreciate good clarinet playing. ;-)

Musically, or stylistically, it was nice, I suppose.
I guess I do NOT LIKE the sound of the basset clarinet. It's just that sometimes I think it honks like a foghorn. The higher notes sound ok but when it it gets low, I find it irritating. I am sure this might not sit well with some people, but there you have it.

I was at this concert, and thought that Bil Jackson played incredibally on his Basset Clarinet, and that Jefery Kahane did an amazing job with his two piano concertos, esspecialy No. 20 in D minor (The last piece of the concert). On the whole it was a great concert. I can't wait for them to perform Pictures at an Exhibition this April (which I also have tickets too!!).

Bellflare has a good point re: the "bottom notes". I also noted the considerable degree of "tonal hollowness", partic. of the low C and have experienced the same on some Full Boehm Bb cls, its low Eb can really "speak", also on my Selmer Alto cl !!. Bil did keep it well under control, tho. I did have the thot, "I wonder how the 622 might sound on a good, well-played Alto cl, if the high notes could be reached" [or ?lowered?], Heresy ?? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

This is obviously Mozart's year.
YK250?

I was lucky enough to hear one K622 live (Rusinek PSO), several live or live-recorded broadcasts incl Morales, Jackson, the Kam streaming video, a transcribed broadcast from Asia on NPR, and attended 2 live Kegelstatts (Morales in Saratoga NY with Andre Watts at piano, and Rusinek in Pgh with Biss and Zuckerman on viola).
Did I have a favorite. Sure.

on the original instrument? I don't think so ...

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
