 Clarinet Case--Need a recommendation
Author: Geoff

Can anyone suggest a good clarinet case? I need a replacement case for my Selmer Series 9. I checked SKB and Propac at a music store and they don't fit too well (and are a little chintzy). Thanks!

Consider your needs. Do you want it big enough to carry music? (I do - but then I am not a student needing to stuff the case in a locker!) How much protection do you need -- Bulletproof or just easy transportation? I personally thought the larger ProPac was pretty nice if you like the style. Some of the cases now available have so little room for accessories - I avoided those like the plague.

You can still get a Selmer case for it if you want to pay the price. I think they run about $225 retail.

If you have the original case from the Series 9 you may not be very happy with the current Selmer Paris clarinet case. It has practically no storage space at all. I had a Series 9 (among many Selmers I have owned) and the case it came in when it was new had a pretty ample accessory compartment. The new Selmer Paris cases have about a quarter of the room in them. I was so displeased with it when I bought my Selmer Recital that I wasted energy by writing Selmer a letter expressing my displeasure. I also don't like the way the lower section of the clarinet must be turned practically on it's side in the case - it's designed that way. The case is even smaller than the current Buffet pochette-style case. It looks very nice and it is sturdy and weighs next-to-nothing, but it's not very practical if you carry much gear with you.

I have a new Selmer and the case is very small--barely enough of a little rectangle to hold cork grease and maybe three reeds. I took it to be Selmer's way of saying, "don't put anything in the case with your clarinet." Maybe they were just being cheap, but it is a very pretty case. Michael

I recently bought a BAM double case. Very roomy and light with lots of space for music and other things. Has handles and can be carried backpack style as well. It's fairly light too and seems well insulated to take out in extreme weather, which I would never do with the pretty jewel box that the Signature comes in. Cost me $200. Just check to make sure that the cover adheres completely to the body of the case. My only complaint: it doesn't stay open, so I have to keep it open with one hand while removing the clarinet parts with the other. Takes a little training.

DO NOT BUY A BUFFET FRENCH DOUBLE!!!!!!!! THEY ARE HORRIBLE!!! I have had mine for a few short months and it has been in repair twice and needs to go back again. It's not just me.......everyone that gets them hates them. Get the big attache case, but do not get the slim double! Trust me!
