 'Collector's' Clarinet

Someone in classifieds has a 'collectors' clarinet valued
at $10,000-50,000, they say.

Buffet, A-clarinet,#54673,made in France,1957-58,wood
body,silverplated keys,6 rings,22 keys,with two-clarinet, padded,molded case,excellent condition, used only once or twice.Considered collectors' item of value $10,000-$50,000. ID=896

$8000 plus shipping costs

Who considers this a collectors item? Perhaps because it's never been used?

I know there's an era of clarinets of Buffet that are quite good, but 8 grand?

Does anyone know that range of serial numbers (for A and B flat)that's considered the 'top flight' old Buffets? Or know somewhere to find it?

Not me. 8000 smackeroonies? Hmmm ... Wishful thinking. If someone appriased it at 10-50K, I'd make a quick deal and offer it to them for 8K.

Check in the Equipment section here for an article by Clark Fobes and what he thinks of some of the different years' qualities.

He's dreaming. It has no particular "virtue" compared to earlier, later, or current clarinets.

that's just an old R-13. Maybe if it was played by a super-famous clarinet star, it would have some value above it's utilitarian value to someone (I have Daniel bonade's clarinet...want to come up and see it??)....sort of like like the rock that someone paid 1M for...its worth 1M to someone, but try to sell it to someone else...

in the guitar world however, celebrity played axes go for far more than their utility value: early 50's Martin D-18 goes for 2-3K, elvis presley's d-18 went for a lot more.

was this elvis' clarinet?

I saw pictures of it. It's an early R13. I asked the seller what was special about it and received no response. I think it's someone who's desparate for money because they couldn't e-mail pictures and desperately wanted their polaroids back because they were "very expensive". It all sounded too suspicious to me so I dropped it. I'm buying a bigger house instead. Let the buyer beware!

I checked with a few sources and the estimated retail value of this instrument in good playing condition is $900-$1,000.

I concur. Lets consider for a moment. The price of a NEW Leblanc 1611 Pete Fountain model with GOLD Keys and rings is about $6,500.00, full retail, NEW! What could be so special USED that its worth more than that? I've been working on clarinets for over 25 years and I haven't found one.
