I recently was given a very old Bb Buffet clarinet. The horn has standard Boehm fingering but has a detachable metal upturned bell. The bell must be original because of the stamped Buffet logo and matching serial number. Does anyone know of this type of clarinet? It plays extremely well.

A search on "saxonette" will give some info, although those all seem to be Eb instruments. I believe I recall hearing that someone was currently making upturned metal bells for Bb sopranos, although I'm not sure what the supposed benefits would be. Personally, I think they just look kinda cool.

As I mentioned in a post a few years ago, there is an old photograph of New Orleans clarinetist "Big Eye" Louis Nelson DeLisle with one of these clarinets -- Albert system with the upturned bell. It looked like an alto clarinet which had been left too long in the clothes dryer!

I bought a metal upturned bell that looks like a smaller version of an Eb alto clarinet bell for my Bb soprano clarinet. It's made by Orsi and Mike Welsh sells them on ebay. I use it to taunt the clarinet section when I, the lead sax guy, sits in with them. :o)

I read somewhere long, long ago of such efforts in the early days of radio broadcasting, the idea being that the instrument would project better. I don't have a clue where I saw it though. I know that it is not in Kroll's book, and I don't think that it is in Rendall.

Sorry but I have no photo link because I came across that photo many years ago, way back in the BC (before computers) era.
As I remember the photo appeared in one of those jazz anthology books along with several other photos of the old New Orleans players. I also seem to remember the caption stating that the photo was taken in 1949, which would have been shortly before he died.
If I rediscover the photo in one of my books I will be sure to let you know.

The curved bells were also made by Buescher, as I have one on a fine metal clarinet. Newer made bells have also come up on eBay.

I would love one of these...
I think they were originally made by Buescher, in A, Bb and C. However, I've found Gretsch and Supertone versions as well.
Most of the ones that I've foind on the internet (I've found around 7) have had Albert system, although 2 have had Boehm System (and I believe extended or full, or something like that. It had a few more keys and rings and things anyway). And it was in C. A rare find, went on eBay for around $1200 in February.
Gandalfe, is there any difference with your orsi bell? (i noticed that by the way). Have you considered getting a Paraschos barrel to go with it?

The Orsi bell looks more like an alto clarinet bell but with the Orsi name indented in the metal. The buescher one looks even nicer.

Sorry contragirl, I didn't realise it was your site.
I saw that on eBay in February(?) and nearly bought it, it went for around £600 in the end. I've only seen one other Boehm system one on the web (thats original, not a normal clarinet with a bell)
