This past saturday night the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the University of Minnesota put on a concert that included Elliott Carters clarinet concerto. The piece was mind blowingly difficult but Timothy Paradise(Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra) played it with apparent ease. I was amazed by his control of altissimo staccato and his pinkies were moving so fast it seemed they were just a blur. It was an amazing performance which was enhanced by the presence of Mr. Elliot Carter in the audience. I havn't heard of anyone mentioning Mr. Paradise in this discussion before. Does anyone know anything about him...if he teaches...who his teachers were? Also, how difficult was the concerto?...it looked and sounded very complex....how is it rated compared to other virtuosic 20th century works. I don't think I've ever heard a more difficult piece played live.

The Carter Concerto is among the most difficult things I've ever played, having already done things like Corigliano and other new concerti like them. Carter's music for me takes a long time to prepare because if you spend enough time with it, it all comes out very naturally. Think of trying to walk again after a severe accident, seems very natural but sometimes it's the hardest thing to do. It's certainly up there in difficulty, but worth all the effort. Elliott has a special place with me and his music is something I cherish.

Timothy Paradise is a very accompleshed Clarinetist Priniple of the SPCO since '77. He edited and gave the Premier of Aaron Coplands Sonata with Copland conducting the SPCO in '78 and again in '79. I have admired his playing for longer than I have played the clarinet, I have been going to SPCO concerts since I was 8 or 9. He may not quite be the technician Burt Hara (Minnesota Orchestra Principle) Franklin Cohen are, but combines his none the less impressive technical abilities with a wonderfully rich flowing sound and great dynamic control. He has degrees from Pomona College, Yale and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Munich, so that my give you some idea of who his teachers were.
