I am having cataract surgery next week with the next one to follow a few weeks later assuming all goes well. I am actually going to not play the last concert of the year with my community orch since both surgeries may be before the concert and I don't want to push it. Anyway, my question is this; How does the recorder rate compared to the clarinet in terms of vibrations, pressure up into the head, etc? It seems like it would be a safer instrument to play after a surgery like this compared to clarinet or especially oboe, french horn, etc. Is there anyone who has actually done any measurements or data gathering about this issue?

No measurements etc., but I have had cataract surgery in both eyes (several years apart). I played clarinet and bass clarinet within a week afterwards in both cases, no problems at all. In that recorder playing involves little or no air pressure, I'm pretty sure you could do that on your way home from the surgery center! Of course your eye doctor can give you far better advice than I can!

Larry "Blind" Bocaner: Since you have already had the surgeries, I would say that I am probably the blind one between the two of us. And yes, only the surgeon can gaze into my eyes after the surgery and see how the healing is going and make recommendations.

My cataract repair/recovery was very similar to Larry's, no problems. Was a bit "unbalanced" for a while, blamed mistakes on that. Now with Macular Degeneration, [still taking my AREDS, Hans], blame bad notes on it ! Don

The recorder needs about 1/10 the air pressure of the clarinet and produces almost no vibration. If your doctor says to keep away from those, recorder is ideal.
Soprano recorder is the same pitch as the piccolo and is really only for kids. Get a plastic alto, which is not expensive, and spare your ears (and those of everyone else).
Good luck. Let us know how your recovery goes. I'm headed for cataract surgery in a few years.

Well, I thought I had a few years as well. They just went bad pretty suddenly. I do have a Hohner pearwood alto recorder. We are doing a nice choral piece based on the Seven Last Words from the Cross for Good Friday where I think the alto recorder would sound really nice. So would the clarinet if the time is right to play again.
