 Mozart and Shosta!
Author: bob49t

The ww section of our symphony has been asked to do a concert celebrating Mozart's 250th. We are aware also, that it's Shosta's 100th.

We're playing the Mozart Gran Partitta and I was wondering if there was an original or adapted Shostakovich say eg parts of his Jazz Suites for the same or similar line up

Thanks BobT

The Spokane Symphony just performed the Shostakovich Violin Concerto! It got raves: like "Shostakovich rocked!"

Thanks Bob, but what I should have emphasised was that I was looking for a Shostakovich work written for or adapted to approx the same line up as Moz Gran Part...oboes clars, bsns horns......or even for four to six of the 13 players. I suppose there would be accompanied solos that we could intersperse.

Selecting pieces to play with the Gran Partita is very difficult because of the basset-horns. Two pieces which have the same instrumentation are "Serenade" from works of Dvorák, published by Norvik Music and the "Sinfonietta" by Jiri Kratochvíl. The last piece is unpublished and is scored for the same as the Mozart except there are only three horns and two double bases.

Turning to Shostakovich, the "Romance" from "The Gadfly" has been arranged for wind nonet (2+2+2+2+flute). It is available with the Dvorák "Serenade" from June Emerson Wind Music, Ampleforth, North Yorkshire.

(Disclaimer: I arranged the Shostakovich)

Well done John - that's what we need- flute being involved is no bad thing as I might do a couple of the Shosta trio pieces for fl,cl,pa also, so that fits.
We've got the music for Dv Ser, so I'll have to see if I can get the Shosta separately. SO I'm on it's case.
Yes I know the GP is better with the original scoring for bassets, but there is a thread here that discussed using higher register of bass clarinets to good effect, there being more bass clarinets about than bassets. I've just looked at the alt clar parts (3 &4) and even reading an octave up, the higher of the two don't go into the bass stratosphere. altiss A is highest at first glance.
Thanks for that good lead.

PS my first few searches on JE's website produced nothing. I 'll phone her to

If Mozart were listening I am sure he would prefer either of his octets done with the correct instrumentation that doing the Gran Partita with bass clarinets.

I agree Graham, in an ideal world this would be true. We have a plethora of good bass players about but not a basset horn to be seen. So practicalilty comes into it. We might record it and post it here. See if you like the bass clar version (an octave up from written)

I'm a purist at heart too
