Hi I am a beginner and would like any recommendations on buying a student clarinet. and recommendations on what not to buy
I will be playing Klezmer type music

that's a very interesting question....any used student clarinet from one of the big guys....buffet, leblanc, selmer, yamaha should be just fine, be it wood or plastic...make sure that it has been well overhauled and evaluated by a repair tech, some student horns get abused....get a good mouthpiece...not the one that came with he horn....at that level, leblanc/woodwind, selmer, or vandoren should be ok...or one of the student style mp from hite or fobes should be ok...
might as well start on vandoren reeds....
klezmer music??? wonderful and much much fun and joy in this music....if you want to be historically accurate, many klez Kats played on albert system horns..but it's better now adays to learn the boehm system if you're a beginner..

I LOVE Klezmer music (I'm a goyim) My favorite Klezmer players ALL played Albert system (Dave Tarras, Naftule Brandywein)...If you are going to play in the school band, you need a standard Bohm system clarinet. If your really serious, try to get a used wooden horn. They're much nicer...a Selmer signet with an overhaul should do nicely.Make sure you listen to recordings of the traditional 1920's cats, not only modern guys. There are reissue cd's out there...you can find them...good luck!
