 B.M vs B.A

Hi, I am new to the boards and have recently auditioned for some Schools around Southern California for clarinet. I noticed some schools offer Bachelors in Music and/or Bachelors in Arts. Can anyone tell me the major differences between these two. Thanks.

It depends entirely on what school you go to. At some, the B.M. is the more prestigious, a step above and beyond the B.A. that adds a specialization. At others, a B.A. is more prestigious, with a B.M. being a "conservatory degree" that has less academics.

The BM is the "higher" degree at CSU Long Beach, generally adding a year or so onto the BA, with an option in history, performance, composition, or education.

I've heard tell of people who had the BM from CSULB looked down on by grad schools because it wasn't a BA, which, to a CSULB student, is completely backwards.

Just a word of advice. While a Bachelors of Music may be more prestigious from some conservatories, keep in mind that at a B.A. may give you more mobility on your resume should you decide on another career besides music later in life.

Cool Thanks again for your responses. I will look more into the classes and what each school offers.
